...Had a Garmin Hard Carrying Case for my Oregon 450t for several years; I'm completely pleased with it. The negative reviews have me puzzled. Perhaps the reviewers want something more compact. I find that the large size provides the kind of protection I wanted, plus it is easier to manipulate in an outdoor setting, especially with gloves on. I have used this product in all kinds of weather, dust, snow, rain and hard-knocks and it works perfectly. I really like the way it can be carabinered to the strap of a backpack so it can be flipped-open, the "on-off" button is easily accessed (another rationale for a large enclosure, by-the-way) and is at the perfect distance from my eyes for easy reading. This set-up is so good I would urge anyone using a pack that lacks an attachment on the shoulder strap to sew-on a d-ring to the packstrap on your "handed" side (right strap if you are right-handed, etc.) When hiking, cross-country skiing or hunting, this is incredibly handy.

This case fits my Garmin Oregon 400t perfectly. Inside the case there is a latch that attaches the GPS to the case so when you open the case the GPS doesnt fall out. If you hang the case from you backpack strap, or waist belt, you can open the case and operate the GPS easily. The case has a hard shell that protects the GPS from impact or drop. I am not sure, but the nylon seems to be the kind that repels water, but the case doesnt seal hermeticaly, therefore I would avoide moisture. Great case, Henry

ReplyDeleteI like the carrying case. You can attach the case with an integrated Velcro adjustable belt loop or included Carabiner. The unit attaches to the case by a clip that attaches to the unit and the clip is velcro to the case with a 6 to 8 inch strap so you can pull the unit from the case and know it is still attached securely to the case. I would recommend this product.

I bought this largely for storage and when packing my Oregon in luggage, not so much for use outdoors. For fun, I took it hiking with the Oregon 550 installed, and found it actually works very well on the trail in spite of being a bit large and bulky (my initial perception). For hiking, try installing it on a main pack strap near your chest. When you open it, the GPS is clipped into the inside of the case with a clip and strap at the back, much like the carabiner/strap that came with your GPS, then cinches down with velcro so it doesn't move around inside the case. The unit stays in the half that is opposite the external attachment strap and carabiner, and some thin webbing on each side prevents the case from opening past 90 degrees, meaning it is then parallel to the ground and at a perfect viewing height if mounted on your chest.
ReplyDeleteThe carabiner is easily removed if you don't need it. Below the biner is a velcro/nylon strap with loop that attaches readily to a variety of things, much like the back of a camera case has. You can't see any of it in the picture here on Amazon. The gray strap with the black plastic buckle sticking out in the picture is part of the closure system, not for attachment to your gear. When reading this review, don't confuse the gray straps outside with the black strap and plastic clip inside the case.
The case doesn't allow for use of the 550's built in camera, but removal from the case for using the camera would take maybe 15 seconds, as would replacing it when you are done, so it isn't a big deal if you aren't in a hurry.
As far as protection, I doubt you will find anything that comes close and still allows for ready use while on the trail.
This is the solution if you don't want to be worried on where to store your Colorado GPS!
ReplyDeleteThe soft cover inside the case ensures no scratches, the resistant outside guarantees protection from impact. Easy to open and to close with a carabiner that helps carrying it around.
This is a really good product that I feel is exactly what we need to protect our investment in our GPS unit.
ReplyDeleteThe case was delivered promptly. It fits my GPS unit as advertised w/o any problems. The case is strong enough to protect the instrument in most cases.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like it at first but when I cliped it to my belt on the side of my hip It looked and felt cool, like a gun in its holster!! There are two straps on the inside of the case that keep the case from fully opening, I took some scissors and cut them off. I can pull the gps out alot faster now. Putting this case on the side of your hip is the best and safest way to carry your gps without it getting damaged.
